For professionals using AI at work, the stakes are even higher. Feeding proprietary code, client lists, or internal strategy into a chatbot can leak trade secrets and violate regulatory requirements like GDPR or HIPAA.

“A single careless prompt can expose your entire company's data,” warns Linden. “And once it's in the training set, there's no guarantee you can remove it.”

What This Means

The ability to opt out exists—but is buried in settings menus and often requires account-level changes. Users must actively tell each chatbot not to use their data for training.

Failing to opt out means your conversations become part of the model indefinitely. Companies claim to anonymize data, but independent audits are rare.

“Until regulation catches up, the burden is on the user,” says Vargas. “You have to assume everything you type could become public.”
