Breaking: Kubernetes v1.36 Released with 70 Enhancements

The Kubernetes project today announced the release of v1.36, codenamed 'Haru', featuring 70 enhancements. Of these, 18 have graduated to Stable, 25 are entering Beta, and 25 are introduced as Alpha. Several deprecations and removals are also included in this release.

"This release reflects the strength of our community and development cycle," said Chad M. Crowell, v1.36 release team editor. "The consistent delivery of high-quality releases is a testament to the dedication of contributors worldwide."

The release team includes editors Kirti Goyal, Sophia Ugochukwu, Swathi Rao, and Utkarsh Umre, along with contributors from dozens of SIGs and working groups.

Release Theme: Haru (春)

The release is named ハル (Haru), a Japanese word carrying dual meanings: spring (春), clear skies (晴れ), and far-off horizon (遥か). The logo, created by Natsuho Ide (avocadoneko), reimagines Katsushika Hokusai's Fine Wind, Clear Morning (also known as Red Fuji) from his Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji series.

"The design symbolizes release v1.36's spirit of exploration and community guardianship," said Ide. The logo features two cats, Stella and Nacho, wearing Kubernetes helms, representing the collaborative guard of SIGs, maintainers, and contributors.

Background

Kubernetes is the leading open-source platform for container orchestration. The project releases three minor versions per year. Each release follows a strict development cycle, with features graduating from alpha to beta to stable. This ensures production reliability while fostering innovation.

Kubernetes v1.36 is the first release of 2026. The release team comprises volunteers from across the cloud-native ecosystem, including first-time and veteran contributors.

What This Means

For cluster operators: Stable features are now production-ready and can be adopted immediately. Beta features are enabled by default in many distributions and should be tested for compatibility. Alpha features are experimental and require explicit opt-in.
