Microsoft has released a critical update to the Python Environments extension for Visual Studio Code, promising dramatic speed improvements and enhanced reliability. The April 2026 release targets long-standing startup bottlenecks that plagued developers using remote or containerized workspaces.

"This release addresses the biggest pain points our users reported — sluggish activation and crashes during remote development," said Jane Chen, a senior engineer on the VS Code Python team. "We’ve focused on making the extension feel snappy even in complex setups."
The update introduces lazy detection for tools like Pipenv, pyenv, and Poetry, which previously scanned all environments on startup. Now, those managers are only discovered when you interact with their configuration files — a change that eliminates unnecessary overhead for the majority of developers who rely on venv, uv, or conda.
Faster Startup and Resolution
Activation times have been slashed, especially across Remote-SSH and containerized workflows. The resolution path from extension activation to interpreter readiness now completes with less overhead, thanks to optimizations in environment discovery logic.
The default workspace scanning pattern has also been narrowed. Previously, the extension recursively scanned ./**/.venv, which could freeze the Python Environment Tools (PET) process for over 30 seconds on large projects. The new default — .venv and */.venv — covers standard layouts without deep traversal. Users with nested environments can customize paths via the python-envs.workspaceSearchPaths setting.
Improved Reliability
Crash recovery has been overhauled. If the PET process fails during a refresh, the extension now automatically retries and handles malformed responses defensively, preventing the blank environment list that previously required a reload.
"We saw too many users stuck with no environments showing up after a transient PET crash," said Raj Patel, a VS Code developer. "Now the extension recovers gracefully and keeps you working."
A fix for the Conda base environment bug ensures that after a window reload, the base environment is correctly restored instead of being incorrectly mapped to another environment — eliminating silent interpreter switches.
Environment Updates and Terminal Enhancements
Package management is now more seamless. The extension automatically refreshes the package list after pip install or uninstall commands by watching for metadata changes in site-packages. Users no longer need manual refreshes.
In multi-project workspaces, creating a new terminal now prompts you to choose which project’s environment to activate, rather than silently selecting one. This reduces confusion and saves time.
On Windows, PowerShell activation failures due to system execution policy restrictions have been resolved. The extension now sets a process-scoped policy before running activation scripts, ensuring seamless environment activation.
